Panel Technicians: ATA assessment process

There are two competency levels Technician and Senior Technician.

Technicians must pass a series of tests of practical skill (listed below) and an online-knowledge test. Each element has an allotted time in which to complete the task.

 
Panel Technician

The five practical assessments at Technician level will measure competence in the following:


• MIG welding to BSI standards 1&2 mm
• Resistance spot welding to BSI standards 1 mm
• Rectification of panel damage using panel beating techniques
• Rectification of panel damage using cold filler
• Removal and replacement of bolted panels


Senior Panel Technician


The five practical assessments at Senior Technician level will measure competence in the following:


• Set up and measure a vehicle using a dedicated measuring system
• Realign a body structure using a body jig
• Remove and fit a new structural welded panel
• MIG brazing
• Rectification repair of a cosmetic aluminium panel
