Paint Technicians: ATA assessment process


There are two competency levels Technician and Senior Technician.

Technicians must pass a series of tests of practical skill (listed below) and an online-knowledge test. Each element has an allotted time in which to complete the task.

 
Paint Technician

The five practical assessments at Technician level will measure competence in the following:


• Panel preparation
• Priming and flatting
• Sealing and masking
• Colour identification and mixing
• Application of finish coats in non-metallic C.O.B and metallic systems
 

Senior Paint Technician

The six practical assessments at Senior Technician level will measure competence in the following:

• Cosmetic repairs
• Repair and paint plastics, and using textured paints
• Application of C.O.B. metallic paint
• Local, fade out and blend techniques
• Rectifying paint run defects
• Colour identification and mixing to a set colour
