Light Vehicle Technicians: ATA assessment process

There are three levels of accreditation. Technicians must pass a series of tests of practical skill (listed below) and an on-line knowledge test:

Service Maintenance Technician

  • Braking systems
  • Engine electrical systems
  • Engine mechanical
  • Vehicle safety and documentation

Plus any 2 of the following tests:

  • Transmission system
  • Vehicle electrical systems
  • Wheel alignment and steering

Diagnostic Technician

  • Braking systems
  • Engine electrical systems
  • Engine mechanical
  • Vehicle electrical systems

Plus any 2 of the following tests:

  • Air conditioning
  • Transmission system
  • Wheel alignment and steering

Master Technician

  • Braking systems
  • Customer liaison
  • Engine electrical
  • Instructional support
  • Supplementary restraint system (SRS)
